Demi Lovato: Just Your Average Teen, Except For the Fame Part

28 08 2010

NEW YORK — Demi Lovato isn’t like any 18-year-old star I’ve met.

It’s press week for Camp Rock 2, the sequel to the 2008 hit TV movie starring the Jonas Brothers and Lovato, which will air in Canada on the Family Channel on Friday, Sept. 3.

Lovato walks into an early morning interview at the Parker Meridien Hotel radiating an odd combination of relaxation and intensity, which isn’t as conflicting as it first sounds.

Unlike lots of women her age, who try too hard to impress you with their niceness, or — worse — present a portrait of someone horribly bored by the whole show-business scene, Lovato is precisely what she announces herself to be. “I’m an 18-year-old-girl who is lucky enough to have one of the greatest careers in the world. I try to keep it real. I don’t have time to worry about what I’m projecting to the world. I’m just busy being myself.”

But she’s not as easy to pinpoint as she makes it sound. Even 30 minutes with her introduces you to someone who’s tough and tender, worldly and beguilingly innocent. And that is her charm. As she sings in the song “La La Land” that she wrote with the Jonases: “I am confident, but I still have my moments,/Baby, that’s just me./I’m not a supermodel, I still eat McDonald’s./Baby, that’s just me.”

“Yeah, I used to crave their burgers,” she giggles, “but now I really have to watch what I eat. Not because of any body image stuff, but because when I’m performing, it’s such an intense workout that I practically have to go into training mode.”

Two nights before , I’d ventured out to the Jersey Shore to see the Jonas Brothers do a concert for 20,000 fans in the ’hood where they’d first started, and Lovato was a prominent part of the bill, performing her own high-energy 45-minute set and then joining the brothers for a few more songs.

The 30-degree heat was intense, the humidity was tropical and Lovato was drenched with perspiration by the time it was over, but she did her best every step of the way, although she nearly passed out from heat exhaustion in the wings afterward.

“That’s the only kind of way I can perform,” she said, discussing it. “I’ve always been like that.”
