Demi Lovato: I Have Bipolar Disorder

20 04 2011

Three months after leaving a residential treatment center, teen star Demi Lovato is bravely opening up about her private struggles – not only with anorexia and bulimia, but also with bipolar disorder.

“I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar,” Lovato told PEOPLE in a candid interview that took place last month in her L.A.-area home.

But during her three-month stay at a treatment center where she underwent therapy for anorexia, bulimia and cutting, Lovato, 18, who said she’s “battled depression from a very young age,” discovered why she was having trouble controlling her emotions and actions.

“Looking back it makes sense,” she says of her diagnosis. “There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I’d be up until 5:30 in the morning.”

“I feel like I am in control now where my whole life I wasn’t in control,” she adds.

The new revelation explains why when actress Catherine Zeta-Jones announced that she has bipolar II disorder, Lovato was quick to Tweet her support.

Now Lovato is taking the same brave step while discussing the “darkest time” in her life. “What’s important for me now,” she says, “is to help others.”

FYI: Bipolar disorder is when people experience major – and often abrupt – mood shifts where they’ll go from having an elevated or excited mood, called “mania,” to having feelings of depression.

Demi Lovato Quotes From PEOPLE Magazine

20 04 2011

Demi Lovato looks healthier and happier than ever after her stint in a Chicago treatment facility, and is know finally revealing the personal battles with her weight, cutting, drugs and alcohol that sent her there.

Demi tells People, “When I was 15, I was only eating a meal a day … When I was about 15, I was only eating two meals a week, but I wasn’t losing any more weight because my body adjusted to that. So I tried new things: laxatives, fasts — nothing was working. I decided maybe I should start throwing up. At my worst, I was doing it five times a day. I threw up so hard and so much, it was just blood in the toilet.”

  • On her now infamous fight with dancer Alex Welch: “I was manic. I was hurt. I just exploded. Everything built up to this point, and I took it out on someone who was my friend.”
  • On if it was her decision to seek treatment: “Yes and no. I flew back to the U.S. and I thought we were going to L.A. My parents were like, ‘No, you’re going to Dallas. We have the owner of a treatment center waiting to talk to you.’”
  • On what motivated her weight loss: “The spotlight didn’t cause this. It just contributed a little bit. I looked at blogs: I saw nasty comments.”
  • On how she would skip meals: “On lunch breaks on Sonny with a Chance, instead of eating, I would take naps or I’d say, ‘I’d gotta get my nails done!’ I’d also go out with my friends more than normal.”
  • On drugs and alcohol: “I’d be lying if I said I never touched anything. Fortunately it never got to a place where I had to be in treatment for it.”
  • On depression: “I’ve battled depression from a young age. I never found out until I went into treatment that I am bipolar.”
  • On reuniting with old friends: “Selena [Gomez] and I reconnected the first week. We hadn’t spoken in a long time. I take the blame; I feel like it was because of the way I’d been acting. She called me and she was the one crying.”
  • On her current eating habits: “My goal for every day is to eat three meals, and that’s challenging enough.”
  • On returning to Sonny with a Chance: “I don’t know if I could handle being in front of a camera with my body right now.”
  • On staying strong: ”It’s a struggle I’ll probably have to deal with for the rest of my life. But I have so much life to live; I don’t want to waste it.

Demi is one brave young woman who is helping millions of girls by making her struggles, and hard work in overcoming them, public!

Billy Ray Cyrus: ‘My Wish is for Miley to Be Happy’

20 04 2011

For country star-turned-actor Billy Ray Cyrus, music has always been a source of inspiration. And after a difficult year, which saw Cyrus call off his divorce from wife Tish and make amends with superstar daughter Miley, the 49-year-old star is ready for a fresh start.

In addition to gearing up for the release of his upcoming album, I’m American, Cyrus is also using his famous voice to educate people about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), in honor of his grandfather who battled symptoms of the disease.

Cyrus talked to Parade.com about his connection to the health initiative. Plus, his biggest hope for his famous daughter as she looks to shed her teen queen image.

Watching his daughter Miley follow in his musical footsteps.
“That’s what it’s all about for our family and for all musicians. I think music is an evolution of what an artist is feeling and going through in their lives. We’ve always been the fans of singers and songwriters who live what they’re singing and sing what they’re living.”

His wish for Miley as she grows in her career.
“My wish for her is to be happy. To love what she’s doing. We’ve always had a slogan in our family: ‘If you ain’t happy, it ain’t working.’ You need to love what you’re doing. As long as she’s happy and loving making music — and I know she loves acting — that’s all that matters. I pray the same for Miley as I pray for my other kids — that they live their life with purpose knowing that it’s about giving back and finding out what you can do in this world to hopefully make it a better place.”

ALSO, here is Miley and Lila’s first pic together! So cute!
