Miley Cyrus
Born: November 23, 1992
Famous since: 2006
Connections: Daughter of the formerly mulleted one-hit-wonder Billy Ray Cyrus, ex-girlfriend of teen heartthrob Nick Jonas, close friend of Demi Lovato.
Known for: Cyrus rose to stardom as the lead on the Disney Channel original seriesHannah Montana, but became even more famous thanks to some duckface MySpace photos, cleverly edited YouTube videos, and a little song called “Party in the U.S.A.” She’s basically a national hero.
Talent quotient: Miley’s got a fairly impressive set of pipes, even if she sounds a little like she’s been on a diet of cigarettes and whiskey for a few years now. Unfortunately, audiences might be a little too distracted by the clothes she isn’t wearing to notice.
Cyrus’ post-Disney ventures into Big Kid acting projects – like the maudlin romance The Last Song – haven’t won her too much acclaim: The New York Times‘ A.O. Scott sniped, “Acting, for the moment at least, seems almost entirely beyond her. Most of the time she seems to be mugging for the camera, play-acting rather than exploring the motives and feelings of her character.”
But she’s really good at posing for pictures!
Scandal quotient: If there’s anyone who knows damage control, it’s Miley. She’s weathered inappropriate photo scandals, onstage stripper pole scandals, “lesbian kiss” scandals, bong scandals, and even Bob Marley cake scandals. And she’s apologized for about half of them.
Projects in 2012: Miley has two moviescoming out next year, starting with LOL, an English-language remake of a French film about a teenager who loses her virginity, smokes pot, drinks like a fish and wants to get rid of her goody-two-shoes image (ahem). Family-friendly fare! Miley has also lent her startlingly gruff voice to the upcoming animated film Hotel Transylvania. It’s unclear whether she has any plans to record another full-length album, given how poorly her last “grown up” effort was received stateside.
Our Call: At this point, Cyrus’ future success is entirely contingent on whether she can convince audiences to take her seriously as an actress. It’s clear that she has no interest in being a clean teen pop act anymore, and that’s fine, given she’ll enter her twenties in a matter of months. But if she actually wants to find post-Hannah Montana success, she’s going to have to be very selective with future material – and convince studio-types that she’s got the chops for those watershed roles.

Demi Lovato
Born: August 20, 1992
Famous since: 2007
Connections: Daughter of a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader; sister to child star Madison de la Garza, BFF to Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, and Miley Cyrus; ex-girlfriend of pop star Joe Jonas; romantically linked to noted teen icon-romancer Wilmer Valderrama.
Known for: Demi is best known for her work in Disney fare, from the television movies Camp Rock and The Princess Protection Program to her series Sonny with a Chance. Lovato has also released three albums, including her 2011 effort Unbroken, which debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. There was also this whole rehab thing…
Talent quotient: Lovato has one of the most remarkable voices of the ex-Disney crew. As songwriter Ryan Tedder gushed to E! Online, “Demi blew me out of the water vocally! I had no idea how good her voice is. She’s one of the best singers I’ve ever worked with. Literally, that good… I mean, she’s a Kelly Clarkson-level vocalist. And Kelly has a set of pipes.”
Lovato has been entirely focused on her singing career since her series Sonny with a Chanceended in 2010, so it’s unclear whether she’s capable of acting in more grown-up fare.
Scandal quotient: Demi checked into rehab in November 2010 after she punched one of her backup singers in the face. While she’s never admitted to partying too hard (these days she’s often spotted in a shirt that reads, “The Only Coke I Do Is Diet”), she has been forthcoming about her struggle with an eating disorder and cutting. Lovato’s policy of openness and honesty has worked in her favor—everyone loves a comeback queen.
Projects in 2012: Beyond a hosting gig for MTV on New Year’s Eve, the coming year looks wide open for Lovato. We’re optimistic that she’ll remain committed to her own health and happiness, but aren’t quite sure what that entails.
Our Call: Despite arguably being the most talented among her colleagues, Demi has a bit of an uphill battle ahead of her: She hasn’t yet found adult material that plays to her strengths. Critics were impressed by her vocal stylings on her single “Skyscraper,” but noted that much of her most recent album was uptempo tween-centric filler. Once Lovato refines her palette, she could do some serious damage. In a good way, we mean.
