With an edgy new single and an even edgier new look, Miley Cyrus is proving that her Disney days are far behind her. Now the outspoken “We Can’t Stop,” singer is addressing the back lash surrounding her current image, and why it doesn’t bother her.
“Everyone said I was a lesbian but I’m like, ‘Being a lesbian isn’t a bad thing,'” she told theToronto Sun of the rumors that started circulating when she debuted a new, short haircut. “So if you think I look like a lesbian, I’m not offended. You can call me much worse. I’ve been called much worse. Being a lesbian is a compliment more than what else they call me.”
Cyrus has been a big supporter of LGBT rights in the past, even tattooing an equality sign on her finger to represent her backing of gay marriage.
“I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties,” she wrote in a 2012 Glamour contributing article.
Cyrus also had more to say about her look, admitting that her haircut really changed her life and gave her more confidence.
“People think short hair, they think tomboy,” she told theSun. “And I’ve done the opposite ’cause when I cut my hair, I did my first Maxim cover when I got number one,” she said, referring to her top spot on the mag’s annual hot list. “It wasn’t about me being the sexiest, it was about the fans voting, but it’s something I loved. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Maxim cover with a girl with short hair.”
And it looks like Cyrus’ care-free attitude is serving her well.
The singer’s latest single “We Can’t Stop” has been a billboard hit and the outlandish music video has more than 83 million views on YouTube.
She’s also up for three Video Music Awards this year for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Best Editing.
