Miley Cyrus Gets Downright Filthy While Strutting To 2013 VMAs
Cyrus’ road to the MTV Video Music Awards is a little dirtier than most, but she’s doing it all for the Smilers.
What’s the grittiest way to get to the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards? Pink got pretty bad-ass last year by flying in on a helicopter, but that’s not Miley Cyrus’s style. Miley’s crawling through the tunnels of Brooklyn with her Smiler gang, baring her teeth and slinking confidently through the darkness.
In the latest VMA promo, Cyrus emerges with fire-breathers and graffiti artists at the Barclays Center stop at Atlantic Avenue. Commuters stand on the platform with a wary gaze (maybe they’re pissed that Miley’s holding up the N train). A busker strums “We Can’t Stop” quietly on a ukulele, while the Smilers blast the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.”
As a VMA nominee for Best Pop Video, Best Female Video and Best Editing, she doesn’t take her upcoming appearance at August 25’s show lightly. And her crew that’s following her underground in the subway? She’s doing it all for them.
“I’m so thankful to my fans,” Cyrus told MTV News on set of the promo. “I’m obviously making the music and I come out here and like, ‘work,’ but it’s really all on the fans. They’re all about buying the record and who’s out there making the video so viral and get to 100 million. So, really, I want to continue to shine the light on them a little bit. That’s why it’s important to show this army of Smilers.”
So what will the Smilers do if Miley actually wins?
“Winning, they get as excited as I do, I really think,” she said. ” ‘Cause they’re the ones who are making it happen, voting every day. So every day I just go to my Twitter feed and I see ‘I just voted for Best Pop Video,’ ’cause I see all my followers who have been voting, it’s obviously so cool. That’s why I wanted to represent them in this whole video and show kinda how they’re a part of my crew.”

Next stop on the road to the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards? Televised promo spots! And just to prove we’re really not messing around, we’re kicking them off with none other than grill-wearing, unicorn twerking Miley Cyrus. Miles is responsible for one of THE most buzzed about music videos of the year—”We Can’t Stop”—so it’s only right we rep the Best Pop Video nominee appropriately (and heavily). Miley’s promo spot, if you didn’t catch it air last night, features Billy Ray’s little girl popping into a party in the subway tunnels below Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, stepping in via an overhead manhole ladder (also, killer white Versace pumps). We caught up with Miley’s long-time stylist, Simone Harouche, on the shoot to pick her brain about her underground BK party outfit-of-choice for the promo.
The vibe of the spot is very similar to her own music video—slow mo party shots, youth personified, etc.—and accordingly, Harouche styled Miles in a way that’s deliberately akin to the “We Can’t Stop” music video. Simone told us that she and Miley both wanted to keep the look of the promo youthful, edgy and sexy. Cyrus also had input on the overall look and wanted to infuse a little sportiness—we see you with the mesh paneled Minimale Animale crop top, girl. The same fash-athleticism can be felt in the black high-waisted American Apparel shorts with side scallops. It’s the accessorizing that takes the look to the next level.
To keep the monochromatic look from coming off too austere, Harouche and Miley layer short chain necklaces—a single strand chain that hits at the center of the sternum, a nameplate reading “Doll,” a rhinestone-laden Chanel necklace that’s this close to being a choker, and of course, her gold “M” necklace. Her very louche ’80s-esque chain belt is also Chanel, naturally, AND it looks like she decided to bust out her “Chic Grill” for our shoot! The final product is amazeballs, classic new-era Miley steez at its finest, and we couldn’t be more ecstatic about how the spot turned out. We do feel it’s important to note that after the shoot, she immediately switched into black high top Chucks. Atta, girl!
